I use the Rubank method of books as a traditonal conservatory approach to early progression. I find their systematic flow efficient and effective to consistent improvement. We would then move to fulfilling repertoire that would qualify the student for collegiate study and competitive performance. Therefore, when I start with a student, I always ask how much they want to improve and how quickly, how important music is to them, and how much time they're willing to invest daily. In my 30 years of teaching experience, and being exposed to many methods, I chose to mix and match them to each student's ability and disposition. Each student is different with variety of expectations, abilities and interests, so as I get to know them, I try to best cater to their needs and find ways for them to learn while growing and improving on every level, not just musically. Generally, my students have a varying ratio of technique/scale study to work on the foundations, an etude/short piece study to help connect musical ideas and teach expression, and a solo piece that is prepared over a long period of time, most likely for a future recital.
