I believe it is imperative to create a positive, musical learning environment for my students and cultivate their love for music. My lessons are individualized and tailored to meet the individual student's musical goals, level and learning style. I provide each student with a practice sheet to monitor their progress. Different students have different skill levels and different needs. Therefore, I assign each student a realistic, attainable goal for each lesson. Read More

For begining student I typically start with a book called Essential Elements. I supplement some of the things in the book with other literature and hand written exercise to help enhance learning experience. For Adults I try to find what genre and music style they would like to work on. This then allows me to plan a custom learning experience that best suits them and what they're looking to gain from the experience. Read More

For absolute beginners, I typically start with some of my own written exercises paired with various books, such as Trevor Wye's "Beginning Flute." At more advanced levels, I encourage my students to work with a program called SmartMusic. SmartMusic has a vast collection of music with accompaniment and other practicing activites. SmartMusic also aids in developing aural skills and it's variety ensures that my students rarely get bored! Read More

Everyone is taking music lessons for different reasons. There is no correct path to teaching when each student wants something different out of lessons. Some want a laid back hobby to develop and have fun with, while others want to compete and become professional; and I adapt to each students goals and wants. I like to start my students off with a strong foundation. I like to use books written by flute players such as Trevor Wye or Moyse, instead of standard band methods. Read More

I also have served as a substitute oboe instructor with the University of Richmond. My students have gotten seats in the All State Band and do well in their school bands because I have a lot of experience with auditioning and I always encourage students to at least try! Playing music is very rewarding and I try to find a style that appeals to my students so they can connect to what they are doing and feel excited about taking on challenges. Read More

For students who are beginners, I usually start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements 2000 books. Not only are they a great source for fingering charts and basic instrument fundamentals, but they also offer great full band exercises in band balance and togetherness as well. Once the beginner student learns more fingerings and is able to read music from the book faster, I will give the student beginner etudes and studies to build their embouchure and fingering skills. I was also a member of the school's jazz ensembles and began to study improvisation. Between 2008 and 2013 I taught classes and lessons, mostly classical in nature, but also played regularly in jazz ensembles around Washington DC. I honed my improvisation skills through attending Barry Harris' Jazz Workshop in NY and recieving lessons from the great Lee Konitz. I've had the opportunity to play with many formidable members of the jazz community, both old and young, and have performed at many venues. Read More
