Each student is different with variety of expectations, abilities and interests, so as I get to know them, I try to best cater to their needs and find ways for them to learn while growing and improving on every level, not just musically. For beginning students who are children, I usually start with how to make a sound on the flute by practicing only the headjoint for the first week to help them develop the muscles in the lips and help to keep the aperture small. Once they feel confident with the headjoint, I would then teach them how to hold the flute properly and have a correct posture when playing. As soon as the student has progressed on these fundamentals, I will introduce them to the first notes on the flute which are typically B,A and G above the staff. Read More

I like my students to bring a small notebook, so that they may write their homework down, and any practice assignments.  I expect my students to keep a practice log of how much time they practice per week, in between lessons.  I always insist that setting goals and expectations for them, is very important, as well as keeping track of whether they themselves are staying on task.  I try and incorporate different ways of practicing or playing music, so that even practicing turns into being fun and exciting and doesn't feel like a chore.  Read More
