I typically teach based on my own custom lesson plan, which consists of a combination of exercises and working on specific pieces, as well as listening and sometimes composing. For online classes, I find it is useful to give students things to listen to outside of the lesson, and even for students to record themselves playing sometimes. I try to find out what the student is interested in, and tailor my instruction based on the goal of the student. Read More

For elementary students and some middle schoolers, I usually either work out of Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements book 1 to begin their studies or continue where they left off. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level. If the student is in band at school, I also work through that music with them if they are interested. Read More

Effectiveness is key when practicing so I have always encouraged multiple practice sessions a day but smaller amounts of time (15-20 minutes) so that you can really improve and see changes in your playing and musicality. This also helps keep the student from becoming frustrated and developing a negative relationship with the piece, practicing, or music in general. I would like to assist and encourage my students to enter contests, recitals, and NYSSMA as well as compose their own material so they can stay motivated and feel accomplished while challenging themselves.
