My teaching approach begins by meeting the students where they are in regards to musical capability. We soon push the boundaries of what they think they are capable of and allows them to apply the music theory in real time. A consistent schedule, whether it be during our schedule lesson or a follow up email packet, is the distinctive difference in my lesson plans. This practice regimen should continue long after our scheduled lessons and should be one of many vital keys to your child's future successes. Read More

For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. My teaching method works for all students, no matter the age or musical level. Read More

I began teaching flute lessons in college about 10 years ago. In addition to private lessons I have assisted with school concert and marching bands. In the beginning I like to ask each student what their goal is so that we can work towards that, whether it is to become first chair in band, make All-State, play for Solo Ensemble, perform with their church, or to just have fun and learn a new skill. I began teaching in my sophomore year of college at the age of 19. I started by giving thirty minute to one hour lessons to local students. I soon began leading masterclasses for the flute students of the local middle and high schools. Most recently, I taught a masterclass to a large group (30-40) of high school flute students. I have also had training as a general music teacher (K-5), so I have taught children how to play the recorder. Read More

One of my greatest joys have always been to see my students make progress and express how happy they are with themselves after working hard, and this is one of my greatest motivations to teach and give teaching all that I've got. As a private studio instructor, I encourage my students to keep detailed notes of our lessons and record their practice sessions and discoveries in that same note book for this helps with organization and focus, thus eliminating the need for aimless practicing and playing of ones instrument. Materials: Flute: Rubank Elementary/Intermediate/Advanced Method, published by Hal Leonard, along with relevant supplemental materials (solos, pieces from student's school band, duet books, etc.) Piano: Alfred Beginning Piano Series Philosophy: I believe in a collaborative approach between teacher and student. My style is based mostly in questions I ask of the student, asking them what they're thinking, feeling, and experiencing as they play certain passages or exercises. I believe in metacognitively working through the experience at an age-approrpriate level to master complete understanding of the musical instrument and the music itself. Read More

Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. Classes are also available for older beginners interested in learning classical or other styles. Read More
