I use a variety of methods for my teaching style. I usually have a few method books that I bring to a first lesson, and after meeting the student I will decide on the best one. Once the student has progressed and shows some motivation to be slightly challenged, I'll introduce "popular" music so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment! Music is associated with movies, radio, etc., so to be able to play something recognizable is exciting for the student and the teacher. Read More

I started playing drums at age 10 thanks to my father, who is a drummer and always had a drum set or two set up in the garage. I joined the school band in 5th grade, but soon quit, as I was distracted in school and it was a little too academic. It was in 6th grade that I started my first band with some friends, and I've played in various bands ever since. Read More

I also have play-along tracks and transcriptions I can print out and give to students. I try to balance the book work with the play-alongs to keep things fun and exciting while making sure they are learning something along the way. I've found this approach to be very effective while at the same time keeping things fresh for the student. I will also allow students to bring their favorite music to learn once they are at the point where they can play and I feel they have a grasp on the basics. Read More

With my teaching style, I try to maintain open lines of communication as much as possible. This means learning about students, them learning about me, and feeling comfortable in communicating their roadblocks in music. Music is an expressive art form, and I believe that being able to effectively communicate with students will lead to a better instruction - students feel more comfortable performing and explaining issues, and teachers can cater to the learning styles of those students, which expedites the learning process and creativity. I have written 2 drum books which I use as part of a comprehensive teaching method. All students will learn an equal balance of snare, rock, and jazz drumming, as well as soloing. I encourage all my students to pursue their own style. More advanced studies will include Latin drumming and odd meters. Instruction is also available on mallet percussion, timpani, hand drums, and electronics. Read More
