Hello! My name is Eric, and I'm a multi-instrumentalist with the deepest history on trumpet. I began playing the trumpet at the age of 7, taking private lessons that I continued through high school with several wonderful teachers. I began playing in ensembles at the age of 9. I began playing the bass at 15, drums at 17, and guitar at 19. I now perform on all instruments. I've been a part of the Philadelphia-based band Snacktime since 2020 and we've traveled the country together and played some legendary venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, Irving Plaza in NYC, and were the house band for Jason Kelce's "They Call It Late Night" on ESPN. For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts. I teach my students to read music as well as to play by ear. I host 2 recitals each year. We learn one song start to finish and I hire a professional band to learn and perform the songs with my students at a local establishment or at my studio. I encourage all of my students to perform with our recital band. As far as books, I prefer to use the "new Breed", by Gary Chester, the ''Art of Bop Drumming'', by John Riley , and the ''encyclopedia of reading rhythms'', by Garry Hess, but there are many other books I recommend for specific needs. I believe a strong working knowledge of rudiments is fundamental to establishing good hand technique. I create arrangements combining rudiments to promote memorization and musicality. In addition, I teach four way coordination exercises, to develop bass drum consistency and promote general coordination skills. Students will also be introduced to different types of drum fills that progress into more challenging combinations using both hands and feet.
