For beginning students who are children, I typically start the first day with allowing them to perform what they have learned prior so that I can see where their strengths and weaknesses are. Afterwards, I will work on their strengths so that they feel confident to tackle on their weaknesses. Once the student has progressed in fundamentals, I will advance them to solo repertoires appropriate for their performances. For beginners, I have a special system that implements coordination while utilizing proper counting technique. As their understanding of their limbs grows the more I begin to welcome actual musical notation. This system has proven time and time again to tackle the initial issue that coordination imposes. In intermediate to advanced students I stress the importance of technique, quality of sound, coordination, visualization, and relaxation/movement. In NYC I have played and recorded with many great musicians, including Rasul Siddik, Avram Fefer, Michael Attias, Adam Lane, and more recently with Jean Paul Bourelly, Mark Peterson, Burton Greene and Jon Sass. My collaboration with Reut Regev spans over a decade long, and throughout the years we have worked intensively in Duo, Trio, Quartet and Quintet formats, playing original compositions and covers. For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts.
