For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts. Every drum student is different so I customize each lesson to fit the particular students needs and goals. I always start out with fundamentals and rudiments on the snare drum, Focusing on stick position posture and proper technique. Once these basics are established we move onto a basic drum set method book covering notation, basic drumbeats and drum fills. From there we branch out into various styles of drumming, very often we move to jazz drumming from there as that is usually the first time students are offered to play drum set in their school music program. When teaching a novice student the drums it is extremely important to note that learning the drums is not an overnight affair. The amount of practice needed for thorough syncopation is not to be slept on. HOWEVER, I genuinely believe once a student hits that learning curve where their arms and legs have "minds of their own" there is an infinite amount of progress that can be made after. I always say music is fun and it should always be whether the student is practicing rudiments, or legitimately playing to pieces from Glen Miller's Orchestra all the way up to Michael Jackson. My teaching experience dates back to showing simple rock grooves to the kids at my fathers church. I had very little knowledge about music back then but I knew from early on that I had a niche for teaching. During my time at Rutgers University I was priveleged enough to work for the Rutgers Extension Division which specializes in different lesson and summer programs. Through the Extension Division I was able to gain experience as a counselor, working with children ages 6-18, and also as a substitute drum instuctor. Read More
