My teaching style involves tailoring my lessons to each student's specific needs with an emphasis on ear-training and proper instrument technique. I like to get going on music that moves the student as quickly as possible, so we will use music that is of high interest to the student to develop the ear, learn a bit of theory, and put in the work that will allow the student to really unlock their instrument. With all my students, I will always take interest in what they want to learn. I want to make their experience as fun as mine was when I first began. So knowing my students' musical inclinations is important to my methods, because it gives me a direction in which to apply my instruction. My younger students will start with the basic rhythm rudiments and reading notated percussion music. I am also willing to assist them in any repertoire that students are given in their school's music program. Read More

My teaching style relies heavily upon training the ear to dissect what it is hearing. Developing the ear is crucial to being a self-reliant musician. In drums, the visualization how a rhythm works in time is essential to being able to perform that rhythm. Dissection and mapping are the key to furthering one's abilities on the drum kit. In guitar or in piano, being able to isolate frequencies with your ear will lead you to a more accurate understanding for chord structures and progressions than simply looking up tabs, which are often deeply flawed. I place a lot of importance on my students knowing HOW to make the sound they want to make, not merely on imitation. I desire for you to play and form your own style, which is strong and impressive without any manipulation. My training comes from my experience studied as an orchestral percussionist and drumset player, but you'll find that these techniques are applicable to effective playing in all styles and genres. I have always enjoyed the art of teaching. I find it personally rewarding because when you effectively teach something to someone, you simultaneously learn something yourself. Speaking from experience with my current students, there are pleasant challenges in teaching, like discovering what works and what doesn't with a particular student. Trial and error, positive reinforcement, witnessing progress. Teaching even allows me to express myself creatively because I get to find the best way to explain or communicate a concept. Read More

Previously mentioned, depending on the individual student, my methods and concepts will change. In teaching i have found there is NOT a "perfect way to teach" or "right way". People are different and everyone learns differently and at different paces, so the style of teaching has to change from student to student. However, the biggest principal i have seen in teaching lessons, is if the teacher believes in the student, and the student knows it, results will sky rocket and the student will do anything for that teacher. For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More
