My lessons are very structured, but within the structure is a lot of freedom. An hour long lesson might look something like this: First 10 min.: Warm-ups, discussion about posture, hand position and muscular/skeletal health while playing. Next 10 min.: Performance of previous weeks assignments, with discussion about whether preparation was adequate, what was missed (usually dynamics and other articulations) and what could be done to improve. In 2001 I was 14 growing up in Southern Wisconsin and developed a want to play guitar. I saw one for sale in a holiday catalog and asked my parents if I could get it. Luckily they said yes! I began teaching in 2009 while I was attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell. While I was a student I began to study with some truly great musicians who really helped me realize my potential. I got some jobs teaching area high school drumlines and marching bands and really enjoyed the experience. When I first started playing I was mostly interested in marching bands and drumlines. By doing so the student will be able to imitate, assimilate and finally innovate, which is the goal. Listening to lots of records and copying what the drums are playing is critical! I have developed a method for guitar students of all ages to quickly learn chords and scales so that they can not only learn the chord progression to songs, they can also find the correct scale to "solo" and improvise over them. Once the chord structure and scale are learned I accompany the student, playing along with them so that they can practice playing with another musician and soloing.
