I always enjoy seeing the light bulb moment my students get when they get something right, and learn something new. My teaching method is a simple stacking method we start with a lesson, I try to find where the student may struggle most and spend time with that. Then we move forward, but revisit the lesson prior for continuity. Lip slurs, scales and fundamentals for the brass players and rudiments, speed and handing techniques for all percussionists the practice and teaching regiment is simple yet effective. Read More

I am extremely passionate about music. I enjoy watching the light bulb come on in the eyes of my students when they figured out a specific technique or concept how excited they get. I truly enjoy the process of taking a student from where they are with their technique and knowledge to where they want to be and beyond. I've been teaching for 15 years and in that time I have taught quite a diverse and varied mixture of students over the ears. Read More

For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. With all beginning students, I typically start with very minimal basics. Proper stretches, warm-up techniques (reudiments to help strengthen their dynamics), correct posture and the over all comfort of beginning. Once the student has progressed and understands the fundamentals, next would be reading music and counting time. When moving beyond the fundamentals, I try to focus more on the particular interest of the student. Is there a certain genre, a certain song, a certain player? Read More

Lessons are usually pretty casual. I like to use a book so that we always have a clear path. Students can request that their lessons be more vigorous (say if you're auditioning for a part or instrument for some activity) but otherwise, I tend to keep things more laid back. Read More
