While it would be wonderful if all of my students became virtuosi musicians, I understand that sometimes math class may be at the forefront of their attention. That said, practice is still required. I have found that one of the best ways to teach, is to teach a student to teach themselves. Every students has different inspirations and different passions in music so I make sure to make my lessons specific to each student. I believe in encouragement and positive reinforcement at every lesson. I feel that patience is an essential tool in teaching -- every student is unique and proceeds at his or her own pace. I also like to briefly demonstrate the exercises and techniques we are studying, so that my students can see and hear what they are working on, but the student does most of the playing.
