The first teaching concept I focus on is the capacity to produce great sounds with the least amount of effort. Therefore I spend some time in getting the student to play very relaxed to create a relationship with body and mind, I believe music is an extension of the body and so if the mind and body are relaxed then music will come out flawless. We will use students ideas of songs they are interested in learning as well as some of my own suggestions for repertoire. Read More

As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! There is literally no limit to what you can do. My focus is to get my hobbyists to enjoy performing drums in the comfort of their own home or with friends, and to have my professionally-minded students go out into the world of performing and recording music. I've actually written and produced my own music theory book that was in all Borders stores before they closed down. I've learned a few methods and I try to incorporate them all unless the student or parents wants something specific. My method is a method where I can teach 1 thing countless ways. I love my students to learn theory because it is a very important backbone to music. Some people can play instruments without ever really kwoing what they are playing or understand the theory behind it, and I think it holds them back from truely being creative and understanding of music. With my methods students will be able to play from any genre, any book, and hopefully will be able to create their own music. Read More

For students I will show other people around their age playing the drums and after that I will show them the fundamentals of making a beat and staying on beat. Once students have the fundamentals together then we would play songs that they like and find interesting in and we would play those songs by ear. No matter what level they are in. Not only do I want them to learn something but I also want them to have fun doing it as well too. Read More

Though I do not have a long extensive list of past students and decades of teaching, I am no stranger to the act. I worked helping the more novice drummers in my schools jazz and pep bands to play up to snuff, and also worked closely with an aspiring drummer to bring him from complete beginner to competent enough to play in his church group and join his own band! I started playing drums at age 11. My father played trombone in the NY Philharmonic, so I was fortunate to study with the renowned Elden "Buster" Bailey. After high schoolI attended the Juilliard School. Later I began teaching at a couple local music stores. That is when I discovered my love for teaching. It's very rewarding to see a student develope into a fine drummer and musician. Read More

I think focusing on the basics is very important, but I think it is equally important to engage the student. I always want to know what type of music the student is interested in so they can learn how to play it. Combining basics plus their own interests is something that is very important for me. I also think reading music and teaching out of books is very important. Although it can be a bit annoying to read and do all these exercises. Read More
