I like to see where the student is at level wise and take it from there. Example : if the student has never played before, we will start with how to hold the sticks. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. Andy has recorded records for various bands and three independent film soundtracks in addition to playing for our troops on a USO tour. At California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Andy studied classical and world percussion. There are many books on drums and piano or voice. I have to get to know the student to determine what I will use to get better results. It will depend on their age and attitude and initial talent. Also, a lot of kids are busy at school and don't have much time for practice. Finally, sitting for the first time at a drum kit in 2013, I discovered my true love for percussion. I began taking up to three lessons a week with a blast beat and heavy metal emphasis for the next year and a half. I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band.
