For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I find the interests of a student and construct exercises that will allow them to play closer to what they most enjoy, while also disciplining in drumming fundamentals. I am full of energy and love learning as much as I can, but I also understand that full and in depth skill requires time and a certain level of patience and consistency. I relay this to students by repetition (specifically of principles), though I keep it fun and exciting by varying the application. Once the principle is fully grasped, we move on. I've had great teaching experiences since I've been teaching. I teach students the basics and then work on their own music. This keeps the student interested, keeping them wanting to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. I also teach music reading which helps the student to learn how to see music on the page.
