My teaching experience dates back to my high school days. I taught private lessons to students at the middle school I attended so they would be prepared for what they'd have to do once they got to our level. As a senior in high school I aided the drumline at another local high school that had just opened. At the present time I am teaching musicians of all ages, ranging from the age of 6 to elderly adult. Before graduating from college, my passion for and knowledge of percussion created an opportunity for me to work for the North Forest Community All-Star Band Drumline and the North Forest High School Drumline. There are many books on drums and piano or voice. I have to get to know the student to determine what I will use to get better results. It will depend on their age and attitude and initial talent. Also, a lot of kids are busy at school and don't have much time for practice. It means I need to get a lot done during the actual lesson and make sure that the info I m giving is settling in and there are no gray areas and questions of what to do until next lesson. Read More

1My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals.
