My music background began with school band and during those years I also had private lessons. The private lessons began with the local music store and when I finished their courses they led me to john sutton for lessons ,he played for the buffalo philharmonic. Did a year in college for music composition and percussion(st. Petersburg college, same one Jim Morrison went to ). Worked in a professional recording studio so I could get studio time and recorded my first single with a b side. Radio station dj heard it and convinced me to put out a full album, so I did. It received good write ups by focus magazine and made top 15 in a local band competition twice.
Began teaching when I was in college. Had a good rapport with all my students. Always tried to teach them something they can use now(like a cool beat or fill), this way they get enthusiastic and stay with it. My wife talked me into teaching again. We were at the recording studio one day but had no bass player, but my friends son was there, so I taught him the basics in 10 minutes and we recorded right after. That happened again another time, we needed a drummer, so I gave a basic 10 minute lesson and "poof" ,we have a drummer
I like to see where the student is at level wise and take it from there. Example : if the student has never played before, we will start with how to hold the sticks. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. If there trying to play Rush 2112 but are having trouble with certain parts - we will dissect it and concentrate on problem areas. I usual hand write most lessons but also incorporate books. But books will be used when learning the drum set because it's more about exercising and developing motor activity, coordination and endurance.
I like to set my students up for success. My job as a teacher is to help them reach their goals but also introduce them to other styles and methods that can lead to alternatives never before seen by them. I often set up a routine for the students to give them a sense of steadiness . The pace a student learns at is up to the individual, the important thing is that they learn the right way. Sometimes it takes practice to get perfection, but it is time well spent. The things that take the most time are usually the things you need most.
