I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. We all know most children and even some adults hate eating vegetables, even though it is beneficial for their well-being. The things I teach are like that. I first start off with hand posture: simply learning to hold the sticks correctly eludes even some adults. no matter how far a student has advanced, I always watch their hands. a good hand posture will help the students' sound, as well as help prevent injury. I find the interests of a student and construct exercises that will allow them to play closer to what they most enjoy, while also disciplining in drumming fundamentals. For beginning students I start all the way at the beginning with the basics of percussion, from the way to hold the sticks and mallets, to how to read music. After the student grasps the fundamentals I introduce solo pieces to build a repertoire so that they may grow their musical knowledge and become a better musician.
