I was always able to sing. I started piano in the 5th grade. I played trumpet in high school and made all state band 3 years in a row. I attended college at Houston Baptist University where I received a full scholarship to study music. Once I graduated I was immediately hired to do a national tour which was followed by 5 others. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals.
