I was born to play drums... no kidding, as a third generation drummer in my family, I began beating on my dad's kit from the moment that I could hold a pair of sticks. My experiences in high school and college drumlines, as well as Drum Corps International provided a tremendous base of knowledge, discipline, and dedication to many years of playing live shows all over the country with hundreds of talented musicians. 37 years and 1000's of performances later, I'm excited to perform and to share what Iknow with anyone and everyone. I typically begin with rhythm. The best melodies would not be worth anything if they aren't played with rhythm. After a student gains basic familiarity with their instrument I use a metronome (a musician's best and worst friend. Instead of playing traditional exercises, I teach students their favorite songs and techniques typical of their favorite genres. With my understanding of theory I try to incorporate a tiny bit of theory into every lesson to make an initially intimidating subject more accessible. Read More

I started playing drums and percussion 12 years ago, both classically, and privately trained. I was taught all play styles, and approaches to percussive arts. In high school, I was apart of a drum line and in 2015, I started drumming in a Rockabilly group in southern Illinois. Shortly after, I began to fill in for a rock band, jazz band, and another rockabilly band in the area. Since moving to Texas, I have started to teach with Hays CISD as a guest teacher/tutor. I have the ability to be sensitive to and match the learning pace of any student at any age, regardless of any learning challenges. I very much believe that anyone can learn any craft in music if they're willing to put in the work. Every lesson is engaging, fun, highly informative, inspiring, and musically advancing. Students can learn just about anything they'd want to learn from very innovative angles that are often tailor-made to the individual student's learning ability. Read More

I believe am gifted at finding a good balance, between discipline and chaos, during my lessons. Just enough regimented order, mixed in with relaxed spontaneity. For my younger students, I am teacher that is demands respect and encourages smiles, at the same time. With my adult students, I hold them accountable, without coming off The Boss! This dichotomy also balances types of curriculum we my cover. There will be some written music, some played by ear. Read More

Each student is unique in the way they learn and progress. I come in to each new lesson trying to learn what works best for each student, as well as what each student is trying to gain from the lessons. For example a very young student may just need exposure to the world of music in a very fun learing atmosphere, while an older or more advanced student may want more a more intense lesson. Read More

The following are books that I start my lessons with. In addition, I supplement with materials that my students are interested in learning. If there is a particular song or style that they would like to learn(and is reasonably within their ability level or I am able to modify), I work to teach it to them. Drums: ***The book chosen depends on a student's level and personal goals, but these are great books to start with: Drumset For Preschoolers by Andy Ziker(for students ages 2-6, or students that would benefit from a color-coded system initially) The Drumset Musician By Rod Morgenstein and Rick Mattingly(great for beginning drum beats!) Alfred's Drum Method(for learning rhythms and rudiments) A Fresh Approach to the Drumset by Mark Wessels with Stanton Moore(teaches an intro to a variety of styles, including rock, samba, jazz, etc.) Piano: Alfred's All-in-One Course This book has simple, child-centered lessons that are reasonably paced, teaches beginning music theory, and allows students the opportunity to write.
