My teaching experience started while in college. I began teaching a couple of students and friends private lessons. It was sparse but definitively gave me an good idea of how it was to be some sort of a coach to help find the "inner drummer" in my students. After graduating from Berklee, I stayed in Boston and taught drumset, percussion, and piano at the Boston School of Music. It was a much more formal way of teaching, and I enjoyed that experience very much, and it made me realize even more that teaching is very natural and rewarding to me--from the early stages of developing a curriculum, to carrying it out while making it fun and accessible,to seeing the students having fun playing live shows. The first few lessons will be to gauge where the student is at technically, as well as musically. I like to cater to the needs of the student. Lessons can be as fast paced, or slow moving as the student would like. The important thing is to be comfortable with a technique before introducing new ones. Like I stated earlier, lessons will also include a historical study element. Drumming is best taught through studying the great drummers and musicians who have already mastered the instrument. I believe playing and teaching go hand in hand, seeing that the best teachers and educators are the ones that are actually out in the field making a living with that particular craft. I have had the opportunity to teach a lot of young children, teenagers and adult students over the years and it's still a privilege to be able to impact lives wherever possible and build student and teacher relationships. I learned some chords on Guitar from my hippy uncle. After a few weeks, I started teaching him, and he is 60 years old. Point is, he would listen to songs on the radio like songs from The Beatles and then teach me them. I would hear the chords and realize that he might be playing a similar chord, but not the exact chord. I would play the chord for him and then he would be impressed. Read More

Teaching style is derived from my own techniques proven to develop the style and success needed to achieve. No method books or corny techniques are utilized. We don't use boring teaching method books, but formulate a concise direct approach to artistry. We will learn songs and style that the student will chose, then, incorporate all aspects of theory, scales, progressions as will as pedagogy to enhance not only the playing level of a student, but, a total and thorough understanding of music that will allow the student to progress to a professional level. Most important to my teaching is that each student to listens to a lot of music, and learns to play the music that they love as soon as possible. I work with a variety of method books/videos depending on skill level and stylistic interest, and teach time-tested regimens for building raw ability on the instrument. I also have many exercises of my own invention that are fun to listen to and play, while still remaining challenging and building facility. Read More
