This is done by setting realistic goals for each student at each lesson, keeping them inspired and interested in learning more. When you acknowledge students based on their accomplishments, it helps to fuel them a desire to progress and make them interested in learning more. I like to write out lessons, but I generally start my students off using Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming." I continued teaching privately during college, and began working in classroom settings the past three years.
