Introduce something new each lesson, and juggle the "lessons" a little, until they settle. We sometimes work on grooves that are on songs the student likes, and would like to learn to play. I will break the groove apart and go over it together with the students. Rudiments and hand technique are important to have. For beginning students, I start with the Drummers Complete Vocabulary, which establishes good technique. Simultaneously, based on the students interests, I pick two styles that the student would like to begin working on. Once they've learnt a specific rudiment, I show them how to use that in everyday performance and get creative with it by applying that in beats, fills etc. If the student has a specific song or style that they want to learn, I help them break it down into simple parts so that they can understand and perfect it really easily. I've found the most successful drummers can read well and play all styles. For beginning students, I generally introduce 'Syncopation' by Ted Reed along with 'Stick Control,' the PASIC 40 Rudiments, 'Alfred's Drum Method' for drum set, and technical exercises. For more advanced students, I like to use books like Rick Latham's 'Advanced Funk Studies,' David Garibaldi's 'Future Sounds,' 'Portaits in Rhythm' by Anthony Cirone, and 'The Art of Bop Drumming' by John Riley.
