I approach teaching in layers. Step one leads to step two, we cant skip steps! I find it important that for beginners we follow this structure. More advanced students will be on a case by case basis in regards to where we start. I emphasize imprivisation in every lesson weather it be on drums, piano or trombone. I'm a self-taught drummer whose influences are very broad, from '80s Hair Metal to '90s Grunge to punk and country, classic rock, hip-hop, heavy metal, blues, funk, even bluegrass. The only styles I don't play or teach (that are popular) are screamo, death metal (no blast beats here), and jazz. After that I would start with hand technique, which is 3 basic stroke patter, and how to apply them to every part of Drum set.
