For beginner students I usually begin with listening exercises. We will listen to music and talk about what the drummer is doing, and how we can de-construct that. From there we talk about how that looks written down on paper and explore the basics of drum notation. Within this we will also talk about proper technique. We play the full drum set right away, at the first lesson. It is not necessary to own a drum set for 3-4 months, in which time students practice at home on couches or beds where pillows represent the different parts of the drum set. I can offer advice when it comes to equipment purchases. I have a method in place for my beginners: a combination of reading, technique and coordination exercises, jamming with favorite songs, and studying their favorite drummers. Read More

For piano I use a combination of the Bastien books, if you are a beginner. For more intermediate or advanced I use whatever music the student is interested in. It could be the Great American Songbook or classical music. For percussion, for beginners I use the Garwood Whaley book, Fundamentals for the Snare Drum. For drum set I use the Syncopation Book by Ted Reed and a variety of other books depending on the need. Read More
