My starting point for my students is typically having them practice posture, hand position and proper mouthpiece placement. I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band.
