I find that it is important to encourage students to play and practice the type of music they enjoy, and to have fun performing and learning. I believe fundamental techniques are super important for students to advance their music. I also pay attention to what students are interested in. I like to find out why my students are interested in playing music. This helps me to create a lesson plan for each individual one. I like to start out teaching using Alfred's beginner books, and progress from there. Each student learns at a different pace, so I base my lessons off of their progress. My Student Teaching semester granted me the opportunity to work with elementary and secondary levels; starting beginners and working with students preparing for district band as well as college careers.  It was nice to work with this range in age and skill level, whether they were aiming for career goals or simply playing for fun! I now teach Elementary Vocal / General Music in Baltimore County Public Schools grades k-5. I like to sit with my students and have them learn about the parts of the instrument as well as getting to know their instrument.
