My teaching experience dates back to when I was in high school, when I began teaching beginning students of all instruments 10 years ago. I have been consistently teaching students in their homes, my home, and online for the past 5 years. Ive found that introducing students to as many different styles of music as possible goes a long way in helping students enjoy playing their instrument and listening to recordings of their instrument. Hello! My name is Wes, and I am a multi-woodwind instrumentalist based out of Long Beach, CA. I attended California State University, Long Beach for my master's degree, and The Ohio State University for my bachelor's. Though I am mostly seen playing a saxophone, I am classically trained on clarinet, flute and even oboe! I play a wide variety of styles of music, from jazz to pop, and perform and record with big bands, small jazz groups, pit orchestras, and much more! Read More

With beginning students, I start with the fundamentals of the instrument, including embouchure and finger technique, as well as the ability to breathe properly, which is fundamental to playing any wind instrument. I also introduce beginning students to basic musical concepts, such as reading music, and tailor the musical selection to their tastes or to whatever group they are playing in, most often a school band class. For more advanced students, I observe what areas the student needs the most work in and tailor the lessons specifically to dealing with those areas, as well as catering to their individual musical tastes. For all my saxophone students, I always start my lessons talking about sound and working on techniques of how to develop it and how to breath properly. The basics are always the foundation of everything else so even if you are an advanced student, you might be having some bad habbits in your instrument, so I always work on sound. I also work in articulation and how to sound as rhythmically perfect as possible. Read More

I use a wide variety of methods depending on the student's current ability level, musical preferences, and goals. I'm also willing to work with a method or book that a student is currently using. Generally, my students have a varying ratio of technique/scale study to work on the foundations, an etude/short piece study to help connect musical ideas and teach expression, and a solo piece that is prepared over a long period of time, most likely for a future recital. This is important for students of all ages and skill levels and is something students can forever practice and improve upon. I also focus part of the lesson on learning various scales, arpeggios, and other theory based materials. Lastly, I like for students to work on real songs that can be used for performance during every lesson. Thus, the 3 areas I focus on are breathing and overall sound, theory and technique, and perfomance repetoire. Read More

My methods depends on the skill level and interest of the student. Fundamentals are key, but I always try to incorporate them with music that the student is interested in learning. I believe that music should never be boring, and practicing should never be a chore! I also believe that musicians of all skill levels can and should improvise, as it is a fundamental form of creative expression that is often overlooked by classically trained musicians. Read More
