ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

M.A in Music, University of California in Riverside, Specializing in jazz and improvisation, saxophone.    B.A in International Studies, Minor in Music, Boston University

Overview:

I am a musician, performer, and educator located in the Los Angeles area, in Pasadena. I recevied my MA in Music in 2013, concentraing in jazz. I wrote a MA thesis about current jazz music in Los Angeles. I am very passionate about teaching and have been teaching privately for 5 years. My main instrument is saxophone, but I also teach clarinet and piano up intil the intermediate level. I perform regularly with mulitple gourps, I compose for many instruments, and I teach at various music schools throught the Los Angeles area. I love working with students of all ages and skill levels and I am very motivated to help them succeed.

EXPERIENCE

I have taught students of all ages and skill levels, ages 5 through adult for piano, and ages10 through adult for saxophone and clarinet, all skill levels. Many of my past students have gone on to perform in competetions and recitals and still have a great passion for playing their instrument and continue to practice and perform. Working with students of a diverse age range, I have learned much about how every student learns differently and at their own pace. My job is to ensure progress at a comfortable and realistic pace for students, while always motivating them along the way. Lessons should be educational, but also fun, and inspiring. For older students I like to teach them how to develop thier own practice routine that they can stick with and use to themselves in the future.

METHODS USED

For beginning piano, I use the thompson and bastien books, along with basic theory books. As the student progresses, I introduce them to actual peices of vaying styles, as soon as they are ready. For saxophone and clarinet, I use multiple books, depending on the student's needs and goals and a host of my own materials and methods I have developed from years of teaching. I always concentrate on learning how to breathe corrctly and produce a smooth and constant airflow to produce a nice, steady, controlled tone. This is important for students of all ages and skill levels and is something students can forever practice and improve upon. I also focus part of the lesson on learning various scales, arpeggios, and other theory based materials. Lastly, I like for students to work on real songs that can be used for performance during every lesson. Thus, the 3 areas I focus on are breathing and overall sound, theory and technique, and perfomance repetoire. Of course this will vary from student to student according to their goals and styles of music they wish to learn.

LESSON STYLE

I like to teach students in a way that encourages them to think for themselves and learn how to correct their own mistakes. I think it is important for students to develop a solid practice routine, which they can use for years to come. I like inspiring students by going beyond learning their instrument to helping them understand the history of their instrument and the music they are learning and the role/importance of music to them. I help students set realistic goals and help them to acheive them. Lastly, I am a constant motivater and positive thinker and work hard to help students overcome thier difficulties. I like to remind them of their past successes and how far them have come along since starting to play.
