My teaching experience encompasses five years of teaching private lessons to people of all ages, backgrounds, and voice types. I have successfully helped students nail Broadway, film, college, and community theatre auditions. I love to challenge students and help them overcome any obstacles in their voice. Singing is such a vulnerable and sensitive instrument mostly because it is not visible to the human eye. I am educated in vocal pedagogy and teach the Richard Miller method of vocal health. I teach all ages and have experience teaching children of any age. I do encorage my voice and piano students Only if they express interest. What does happen often is that as a student absorbs the approach, it affects their life to some extent they naturally start slowing down and appreciating details in their lives too; they relax and become more aware of whats around them because their minds have been trained somewhat through practicing music that way. In college, I taught a handful of beginning violin students. Throughout college and my years post grad, Ive taught private and group dance lessons and focus on technique and confidence. I apply the same concepts to my music lessons and love helping students discover their personal voice. I encourage regular practice and personal compositions. My approach to teaching is to meet the students where they are. I often ask them to write a list of their 'top ten favourite songs' and also encourage them to listen to music. I want to know what moves them and inspires them, so I can adapt my instruction to their needs. I generally use different methods with different students. Since I expect excellence, I tend to treat students as professional colleagues, expecting them to work as hard and effectively as I do. I tend to develop my own methods as we progress, encouraging introspection by the student and developing a sense of musical independence. Success is subjective; enjoying one's journey is not. I take a very kinesthetic approach to teaching. I believe that no matter the level or style, evey singer benefits from understanding the way their vocal anatomy functions, and how to utilize it in a healthy way. Vocal longevity is a very high priority in my studio, as is having a good time. I am a firm believer that a teacher who does not help a student fall in love with their art has not done their job.
