My teaching experience began in my undergraduate days at Morehead State University. While teaching private lessons to students across Kentucky I also was a music theory tutor for my peers at Morehead. I have experience teaching students at all levels, from beginner to advanced levels. My theory and private lesson students always gained much improvement, and some of my advanced students even entered all state bands and competitions. No matter if a student is considering a career in music or just considers music a fun hobby and wants to improve, there’s always so much to learn! Read More

I have a very energetic and adaptable teaching style. Having worked with students from 3 years old to in their 30's, I can mold lessons to fit any type of attention span. I have also worked with students with special education needs and physical issues, so I can also work with parents to find ways for any student, regardless of their situation, to enjoy a life of music. I will always use positive encouragement, and pressure will never be put on students for results in a certain amount of time. Read More

I like to create a combination of my own supplementary material, along with what the students are preparing for classes or outside engagements. I believe in a very strong fundamental background and have created a set of exercises geared to maximize effectiveness, and guarantee progress. Excellence in preparation leads to excellence in performance, and a focus on fundamentals builds the skillset and the confidence to achieve. In addition to the exercises, I have a standard solo repertoire curriculum students will play through, based on their comfort level with the instrument. Read More

I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals. Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well. Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music. I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. For piano, I use Bastien for my younger students and Farber and Bastien for my older students. Read More

There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student grow as a musician and person overtime. Establishing a personal connection with them to create an environment of success is one that is always a concern of mine. Doing so will allow the student to soar to new heights and present a challenge for me to continue fostering their growth. They learn from me and I also learn from them. These are the things that make teaching rewarding for me. Read More

I usually start with asking what kind of music students would like to learn and go from there. For a student starting band at school, typically I start with the method book they are going to use and move on to the Rubank method book series. For adult beginners, I start with the Essential Elements book for Alto Saxophone to get a good understanding of notes and the basics of how to read music. Read More

My first teaching experience came in the summer of 2008, when I served as the Music Director at Camp Robin Rogers in Spencerville, Ohio, a program serving children with developmental disabilities. This wonderful experience reaffirmed my belief that anyone, regardless of age or ability, can learn to make music. Watching my students' faces light up as they performed the songs I taught them was one of the greatest joys I have ever experienced. Read More
