My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. I like to think I'm a laid-back kind of guy, though I can get loud and boisterous sometimes when a student figures something hard out. I wonder sometimes if I don't get more excited about a student's breakthrough than he does! My wife sometimes tells me I have no "indoor voice," lol. I don't give grades (except for my college students, because I have to), but if I did, the grade would be either "A" or "I," as in incomplete, as in do it over until it's great. Read More
