ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
MM, University of Colorado, Boulder, Clarinet Performance BM, Idaho State University, Clarinet Performance
Overview:
Howdy!I'm a musician and instructor with a relatively eclectic background, which, I hope, colors my expressiveness and pedagogy in interesting ways. I'm originally from Idaho, where I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. I came to Colorado five years ago to attend University of Colorado. After working with the faculty there and under the mentorship of Dan Silver, I received my Masters of Music in Music Performance. I play in the Denver/Boulder area and am actively teaching a studio of bright, young clarinetists.
EXPERIENCE
I taught a little in Idaho but really started teaching in earnest when I moved to Colorado. I've taught individuals from the young beginner to the older person looking to relearn a lost art. I have also adjudicated and taught masterclasses. I've found a passion for working with others that I didn't know that I had. I try to offer my students the tools that I wish I had had when I was just starting out, as well as the tools that will eventually render me obsolete. Nothing is quite as rewarding as a student who has learned an important principle to practicing or learning and implemented it before I have had a chance to bring it up again.
METHODS USED
The level of the student matters greatly to my approach. For younger students, I'll usually use their band music or band methods to supplement class work, as well as offering my own exercises to strengthen fundamentals. Older students often use the Rose, Uhl and Lester etude books. I use Avrahm Glaper's Scales and Arpeggios for my technical exercise or use exercises that I've come up with myself.
LESSON STYLE
I want to support my students learning the basics so that they can play what they want with more success. I try to encourge the developing the practicing and self-pedagogical skills that help them learn when I'm not there. I nurture a strong and confident grasp of musical expressivity. Ultimately, I want my students have a great time playing!
