I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book.  This will provide the student with the basic fundementals.  I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible so the child grows up with music as a fun, artistic outlet.  For students who already have knowledge on their instrument or who are adults, I aim to find what the student is interested in, and adjust my instruction accordingly. The level of the student matters greatly to my approach. For younger students, I'll usually use their band music or band methods to supplement class work, as well as offering my own exercises to strengthen fundamentals. Older students often use the Rose, Uhl and Lester etude books. I use Avrahm Glaper's Scales and Arpeggios for my technical exercise or use exercises that I've come up with myself. Read More
