A great deal of music around the world is based off of the notion of a particular set of spirits or a set of emotions that human beings experience. This is a highly anthropomorphized approach to composition, which has been important in the establishment of human beings in the world today. My main focus in my teaching, regardless of the level of the student, hones in on strengthening the fundamentals of playing clarinet (air, mouth position, posture, finger position, etc). When the student has a strong set of fundamentals, there's no limit to what they can do or play. If the student is more in the beginning stages of learning clarinet, I will mostly focus on these for the first two or three lessons before we advance on to playing music. Read More

I like to play audio/recordings for the students when possible, so that the student has an idea of the style, or the piece that we are studying. I also model for them constantly, so that they get more visual and aural reinforcement. I sometimes give them short music concept/vocabulary assignments, such as learning the names of the notes on the staff, counting rhythms, meters, etc; all having to do with music theory and musical concepts that can be directly applied to their practical aspect of playing. I was accepted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music's Contemporary Music department in 2012 under the instruction of the jazz saxophone professor Xiaolu Zhang. I recently graduated from New England Conservatory in Boston, where I did my masters under the instruction of Jerry Bergonzi, Miguel Zenon and Donny McCaslin. Read More
