Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. My teaching experience started while serving in the army as a saxophone, oboe, and clarinet player. The local music store referred middle school and high school students to me. I like to start students out with what they are already working on. If they are preparing for a concert in school or have a certain method book, that's where I assess their skills. I mark off lines that students pass in their book and give a happy face, or a kind of positive acknowledgement, when he or she passes the whole page. I'm a clarinet instructor who is excited to share his passion with his students. In 2014, I graduated from University of Southern Maine, where I studied clarinet with Tom Parchman, with a degree in Music Education. In 2017, I graduated from University fo Delaware with a dual Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and Composition, where I studied clarinet with Chris Nichols.
