I teach my students to read music as well as to play by ear. I host 2 recitals each year. We learn one song start to finish and I hire a professional band to learn and perform the songs with my students at a local establishment or at my studio. I encourage all of my students to perform with our recital band. As far as books, I prefer to use the "new Breed", by Gary Chester, the ''Art of Bop Drumming'', by John Riley , and the ''encyclopedia of reading rhythms'', by Garry Hess, but there are many other books I recommend for specific needs. If you want to shred, play the blues, fingerpick, learn music theory and reading, be a folk singer, or whatever it is, I'll get you there. Because the voice is the only instrument we cannot see with the naked eye, voice lessons must be extremely interactive. I believe in catering each lesson towards the goals of the individual student. I also believe in the collaboration of teacher and student. I am always asking students opinions or reactions on what we work on in the lesson. I began teaching in 2015 as a percussion mentor at an elementary school while in college. Upon graduation, I joined a community ensemble and taught masterclasses to community members on a variety of topics such as rhythm, musical interpretation, and stick control. I currently teach private percussion lessons both virtually and out of students homes, and I aspire to eventually have a home studio of my own that's large enough to teach out of as well. Read More
