As a musician, it is important to refine performance, technique, and style. I like to find out what the student's goal or difficulty is in each of those categories. Then we plan a recital usually 4-6 months away. I ask the student to choose 4-5 songs that they enjoy and that feel would be a feat to perform. I choose 1 song that I think would challenge them in each of the musician categories. Then we work to prepare the 5-6 songs for the recital. The idea is to have an attainable goal to achieve within a certain amount of time. This requires the student to create succesful practice habits outside of lessons and the recital gives real world experience. For students I have had for more than a year, each recital showcases their improvement.

I have lead others and taught them before ever having my own classroom as a leader in High School and College. It has greatly pleased me that my students have had many accomplishments in many groups. These vary from various Honors Bands, the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, and many High Valued Scholarships. I ecourage regular practice for all my students to review and refine their musicianship overall. I am always looking for new and exciting opportunities to teach those who are interested. Currently I am working in Clayton County Schools as the Director of Bands at Forest Park Middle School.

I am a young professional musician based in the Atlanta area who loves any chance to share my love of music. I am a senior at Kennesaw State University and have been teaching for 6 years now. Some highlights of my musical career have been playing with Ray Charles' family at the Ray-union Benefit Concert, studying jazz performance in Alessandria, Italy with Steve Dancz, and traveling across America to play in some of the finest saxophone ensembles in the nation. I am currently the first chair alto saxophonist in KSU's Wind Ensemble for the third year in a row and the baritone saxophone player in the KSU Big Band.

Teaching should be a healthy balance of encouragement, inspiration, and challenge. I want students to feel good about themselves while also feeling like they are working toward something and pushing themselves to be a better person and musician than they already are. Setting weekly goals and having an assignment notebook are both crucial to this process as they allow the student and teacher to remember what skills can be improved upon and what aspects of their playing that are going well. My main goal in teaching is to help my students love music as much as I do! At the end of the day, that is what teaching for me is all about.

For beginners, I recommend Standards of Excellence and if the parent's budget allows, a subscription to Smart Music which can monitor and record daily practice and inform a student of minor errors so growth can happen between lessons. For intermediate or advanced students, I like to establish a well rounded warm-up routine for their practice and move into solo repertoire appropriate for their level. For adults, I like to cater towards their goals and desires. There are many books out there that provide music for all enjoyment levels.
