For beginning cello students of all ages, I normally use one of my teacher's method books: Cellocity by Helga Winold of Indiana University. As my cello students progress, I slowly introduce smaller pieces that can normally be found in Suzuki method books. After my cello students have advanced significantly, I begin to introduce more complex pieces that are found in the standard cello repertoire. After Book 1 of each series, we begin to explore standard repertoire. Alfred Book 2 is a large jump in difficulty, meant only for more advanced students. Guitar / Bass: New guitar or bass students will start with Essential Elements Book 1. All new students will focus on learning the fretboard and learning how to play common chords and tabs. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. I believe music literacy is one of the most important aspects of learning an instrument. My first experience teaching someone was when I was younger in my high school days, I was teaching my 7 year old nephew how to play ukulele which was an arduous task indeed. But through said trails and tribulations we managed to accomplish our goals together. Currently Im teaching guitar at the fine arts academy and I am teaching one student consistently while also substituting occasionally.
