My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.  Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. I was born in Ukraine in 1977. At the age of 18 I was introduced to one of the"jazz guitar greats" who taught me theory and improvisation. Those lessons lit a fire inside me that has only grown stronger with time.I founded the band, Shykina, in 1997 and toured Europe for the next 6 years, releasing 3 albums. While working on a degree in Psychology at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, I also studied music theory and other musical topics. I began playing bass guitar around 1978 and have played in bands, done session work and given music lessons in Michigan and the midwest ever since.
