My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. With younger students and those new to their instrument, I start with the basics, laying out simple chords, scales, and arpeggios, showing them how they are used in their favorite songs. Once an understanding of these concepts is reached I move on to how to incorporate them in real-time, and show the student how incorporate these ideas using their own unique voice. If there's a particular method book the student and/or parent want to use, they're the boss. If not or addition to, I simply teach HOW to play the instrument. I show them how to hold it, wrist/elbow positions and muscle memory techniques which are very important early on so bad habits don't develop to where they're playing the instrument versus fighting it. This is something I do with every new student regardless of their level, because they sought out a teacher for a very good reason. Read More

I started playing guitar in 2000 and began teaching people my freshman year (2003)for extra money while earning my Bachelors in Marketing from the University of Southern Indiana. I have been giving lessons ever since then. I have an extreme passion for playing and try to encourage my students to find the same passion.
