For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods, including Hal Leonard's Children's Guitar Method, Suzuki methodologies (I am NOT a Suzuki-certified teacher), and materials I've developed over my 25 year teaching career. I emphasize basic technique for the left and right hands, and I make sure they learn the basics of reading music. For older students (middle school-age to adult), I tend to let the student lead. I am a passionate instructor who believes that learning to speak this universal language is one of the best ways to bring communities and people together. I graduated from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver June of 2019 and have been teaching privately for the past two years. Aside from teaching I perform at local venues around Denver with bands of all different genres. I also organize events involving live music, art, and food to promote Denver's local artists and raise awareness for Orpheus Music + Arts Festival: a project I started last year and plan to keep cultivating. I start with pushing students to develop good habits early on in their playing. I like to get my students playing songs in their genre of choice as soon as possible. This method generates interest in their instrument from the very begining. I select their repetoire based on what techniques we are currently working on and find songs that will force them to develop those techniques in order for them to effectively perform each piece. I am a dedicated musician who has been playing the piano since age 3. In my late teens I taught myself to play the guitar and bass guitar, and I have spent my whole life learning the ins and outs of music through theory, composition, and performance. I hold no degrees or certifications other than a degree in environmental science, but I have put more hours into independent musical study than anyone my age who has chosen to pursue a degree in music.
