I tailor my teaching method on a student to student basis. For beginners, I find what bands and music they are interested in and then pick some songs that will be easy for them to get started on quickly. I also try to incorporate basic music reading and notation, especially with younger students. For more advanced students, I assess where they are at and make sure that all fundamentals and techniques are strong, and then come up with a plan to help them progress. Read More

My main goal as a music educator is to help students discover their own spark, or passion, for music and give them a space to let that spark grow and flourish. I like to give small assignments each lesson based on their interests and goals we set together, which I believe helps motivate the student to improve and encourages them to make new musical discoveries each week. I'm dedicated to providing a creative learning environment for students that encourages experimentation, growing from mistakes, and discovering great joy through music. Read More

For beginning students, I use the Hal Leonard Basic or Kids Guitar Method because it is such a good introduction to the instrument. For bass and ukulele I also use the beginner Hal Leonard Method books. For more advanced students, I first get a sense for what they want to learn and where they want to go, by asking them some questions about their previous education, what songs they like to listen to, and any problems with practicing or grasping the material, that they may have experienced. I started my teaching career in 1996, teaching at the same music studio where I took lessons when I was younger. I try to carry some of the teaching techniques that were shown to me when I was taking lessons into my own style of teaching. This includes making the lesson fun as well as educational for the student. Daily practice is strongly encouraged, as well as playing with other musicians, recitals, and writing their own songs. Repertoire includes any songs or pieces that students are interested in learning and will be arranged to scaffold their current skill level. My teaching also places a special emphasis in improvisation - since much of modern guitar music is written from a place of improvisation and involves improvising, I believe it is a vital skill for students to have. Even a beginning understanding of improvising will give students a fresh new perspective on the music they enjoy and will give them the skills to play with any musician they may meet. Read More

My curriculum is entirely driven by the students needs. I don't believe that one blanket method works for all individuals. Therefore, I spend the early lessons getting to know the student and designing the layout for our lessons moving forward. There are definitely certain books that I have used to assist with teaching. These books are dependant on the level of the student. Some of these books are Ted Green's "Chord Chemistry", "Rythms Complete" by Bugs Bower, and the Hal Leonard guitar method books. Read More

I try to tailor my lessons almost like a Doctor sees a patient. Every student is different, I do think it is important to learn to read music. I love music theory and I emphasize learning to love practicing technique. With my beginner piano students I generally use a Hal Leonard series book, but supplement it with a book of piano exercises. With my guitar students it depends on their age and experience, I use a Hal Leonard method book for youngsters and then begin teaching them songs they identify that they really want to learn.
