Instruments: Bass Guitar
For beginners, I always start with technique. The bass guitar is a very physically demanding instrument and without the proper technique, students can injure themselves and prevent musical expression. After fundamental hand technique is in place, I use a hybrid curriculum that my teacher walked me through mixed with my own theories that have worked for me and from the Musicians Institute basic theory book. Once both physical technique and basic theory is in place, the groundwork to explore is set and i can help the student achieve their goals of learning songs, training their ear, or simply being able to play along to records. Traditional. Classical: Suzuki Jazz: Mel Bay Modern Guitar and Mickey Baker. Styles and lesson books used varied depending upon student and school. I like to involve the student in any way I can and make sure they have an interest in the subject matter. I stress the importance of practicing and enjoyment of music. I believe music is a universal language and I approach lessons with an intuitive understanding of musical elements as well as traditional study of theory and craft. Read More

With trained ABA, we can achieve the ever-sought status of “cool”. It is a process of reciprocal musical involvement. I learn from the student, the student then teaches me. Each student is attended to equally with a specific lesson plan (materials provided by teacher). Inspiration and fun is crucial and without it would be a wasted lesson. I’m a nice person with empathy and a determination to keep the student focused and engaged with purpose. Read More

This happens differently for everyone. I believe the most important aspect in teaching music is to communicate universal concepts with language that suits the individual. From a playing standpoint, i think it is important that each student is studying what they find interesting in order to keep them excited and looking forward to lessons and practice. I do my best to cater to the individual and nurture their growing interest in music Read More

I find a balanced approach to studying technique, sight reading, theory and the students favorite songs to be the best recipe for keeping motivated and engaged. Beginning students will use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method (Book 1) to get into the basics of these elements down, while learning basic voicings of the most common chords that will allow them to dive into playing some of their favorite songs almost immediately. Lessons for more advanced students will be tailored to their individual needs, and can cover anything from improvising, to songwriting to learning complicated solos and advanced guitar techniques. My teaching experience goes back to middle school. I didn't get paid for it but I would teach the drummers their part the ensembles and performances in the orchestra and jazz band. That way the teacher could focus on instructing the other students the different instruments. I started booking regular paid gigs after college. I would perform shows and people would ask for lessons after the gig, networking is a big part of the professional side of playing music I encourage listening to all styles of music. Read More

I know everyone learns at different speeds so making sure they are comfortable yet challenging is important to me.Being able to know when the student is enjoying and not making it a chore is a key to helping and encouraging a student learn. Watching them progress in their insturment is rewarding in of itself and nothing is more satisfying. As the student starts to see him or herself accomplish each lesson I like to praise, push and encourage to keep on. Read More
