I also look closely at these aspects with more advanced students. With children, I always discuss lesson plans and teaching methods with the parents prior to any lesson. Once these criteria have been assessed, I will then proceed to my aforementioned method of implementing theory and techniques that will directly aid in the student's achievement of their personal goal. My goal is neither to make an individual into a carbon copy of myself as a musician, or even make them into the best, most competent musician. Read More

My approach to music lessons is to customize and graft them to the student. I approach all of my private lessons as music lessons, not just guitar, saxophone, theory, composition, or piano lessons. Throughout my career, I have consistently found value in being a well-rounded, knowledgeable musician, strong in a variety of skills, instruments, and genres. This is not to say that I do not strive for mastery, and encourage my students to do the same. Read More

Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More

My biggest goal in any lesson is that my students are engaged and having fun! I chose songs based on the taste and goals of each student I teach, and make sure to go over different technique and musical devices found in different songs. Initially when working with new students I like to begin with learning to play some songs and developing some basic fundamental skills, and then circling back and going back over any theory. It is important to me that every student remembers that despite all the hard work and practice involved in learning an instrument, the ultimate goal is to have fun and to connect with other through music. I want to my students to feel relaxed, and unafraid to ask questions of make mistakes. I emphasize the importance of regular practice, but I also want my students to get to know themselves well, to progress at their own pace, and to really find joy in the journey that is learning to play music! My go-to books for Drummers, beginners and advanced are 1. Advanced technique for the modern drummer by Jim Chapin and 2. Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone. No matter what you listen to, the material in these books can be applied to any style. Another tip is to learn what influenced your favorite players. I Guarantee every one of your favorite drummers has studied this book. It contains beginner techniques through the most prominent advanced skills. Read More
