Especially with adult students I think it is essential to cater to the students' goal. If this involves the need to learn certain techniques, requires knowledge of music theory or the ability to read music, I will advise the student so. I teach my students songs that they want to learn, but at the same time I explain the music theory that goes with it. I teach finger and coordination exercises to help with technique.
