The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. I fell in love with opera shortly after starting at Westminster and found my passion in performing the classical art form. I am both goal-oriented and open-ended with my students. At the beginning of lessons, I always check in with them to see how their progress was for the week and any questions or concerns that arose in their practice. I find this puts the ownership on them to reflect on their week of music making (and help them to remember that practice happens more than just in the lesson!). My teaching experience includes working as Skills Instructor at a day program for adults with disabilities. There, I taught dance classes and sing alongs, meditation groups, cooking groups general life skills. I have also lead music in nursing homes for patients with dementia/Alzheimers. I have traveled throughout high school and college, along the east coast, to perform with choirs at churches, schools, and public events.
