By looking at all its parts we can begin learning the fundementals and getting to a point of confidence in a solo or ensemble setting. A positive teaching environment is vital to encourage a student's progress. Lessons should also be fun. If the student is not having fun then something is not right. I like to get to know each student's individual learning style and goals and then construct my lessons based on that.
