In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons. By giving piano lessons, all kinds of music knowledges should be taught. I prefer focus on both performance skills and the art/music knowledge in general. Homework is always needed because being able to play piano is the goal of the students.I will have my students practice etude, sonata/sonatina,polyphony pieces and modern pieces at the same time. I spent my school years playing for weddings, recitals, competitions, church services, community theater events, and of course, for my own enjoyment!
